Yiddish Word of the Day: Plotz
Yiddish Word of the Day: "Plotz"
Definition: To burst, as from strong emotion or surprise; to collapse or faint.
Example Sentence: "When I found out I won the lottery, I nearly plotzed from shock and excitement. 'I'm a millionaire!' I kept repeating to myself in disbelief."
A Little History: The term "plotz" comes from the Yiddish "platsn," which means "to crack" or "to split." In its evolution, however, it took on a more emotional connotation, referring to being choked up with strong emotion, often to the point of speechlessness. This word shows that even in the midst of humor and playfulness, Yiddish doesn't shy away from the deeper, more emotional aspects of human experience. So the next time you find yourself overwhelmed by feelings and can't seem to express yourself, remember: there's a perfect Yiddish word for that!
